Every three to four years, contemporary art platform WARP immerses the city of Sint-Niklaas in highly topical art by organising the ‘Coup de Ville’ arts exhibition.

Key concepts of the first edition of Coup de Ville were integer artistic engagement, dialogue, cultural and generational transgression. The title refers symbolically to an 'occupied city'.

Inspired by Jan Hoet's 1986 'Chambres d'amis', the exhibition aimed to provide a platform for contemporary art and artists, establishing a dialogue with the environment and its inhabitants. Jan Hoet committed himself to this, was heavily involved in meetings and discussions within the educational programme and shared the curatorship with Stef Van Bellingen.

Some 50 artists from home and abroad, both renowned artists and developing talents, working in various media, participated in this exhibition.

There was an extensive (arts) educational programme aimed at various age and target groups. Equally ambitious was the surrounding programme of meetings, lectures, debates, performances, theatre and concerts.

This was an exhibition trail with various locations in the centre of Sint-Niklaas. On the one hand, the track had as its extremities the Koningin Fabiolapark / Shopping Center Waasland, and on the other the NMBS station. Two locations via which one usually reaches Sint-Niklaas (E17 and railway line Antwerp/Ghent). In total, some 25 locations were used, ranging from residential houses, gardens, museum spaces, fallow land and public spaces.
