Young artists are given content-based feedback by means of a personal encounter with professionals active in the contemporary art field. The portfolio forms the basis for selection and the conversations that follow. The portfolio is an elaborate curriculum vitae with a compact reflection of the work by the artist concerned. Based on this information, brief, concentrated conversations for 30´ to maximum 45 minutes are held with commentators from Belgium and abroad. Up to now professionals were invited from Belgium, Canada, China, Denmark, the Republic of Congo, Germany, France, Italy, The Netherlands, Senegal, Spain, the UK and the USA.
Each artist up to the age of 35 who is living and working in Belgium may submit a portfolio. In order to ensure the standard of quality, all portfolios are carefully examined and a qualitative selection is made. Artists are informed in a timely manner whether or not they have been selected. The selection is made by the Warp-board. It is possible o participate more than once in these professional meeting days.
Besides the contact with Belgian and international curators, critics or artists, the mutual encounters between artists also play a constitutive role in the professional elaboration of the artistic career. Despite the relatively brief existence of the portfolio days to date, for various participants – alongside a deepening of the process involving the work itself – participation has already led to exhibitions, invitations to residencies, collaborations with galleries, etc.
Thanks to a grant from the Jan Van Rijswijckcentre it was possible for the 2009 edition to offer a residency and exhibition in London at the time of the Frieze Art Fair. Flanders House in London additionally supported the whole.
In 2010 art platform WARP will organise an XL-edition. During the exhibition Coup de Ville, an international artists’ village will be set up on the Main Square of Sint-Niklaas from the 1st to the 5th of October.
